Why start here

You’re sitting down listening to something you like. Then a mixer grinder starts up in the next room, and the moment is gone.

Both are sound. One was pleasant, one wasn’t — but “pleasant” isn’t the real difference, because plenty of music is deliberately harsh and still unmistakably music. So what actually separates music from noise?

My working definition is deliberately loose: music is a set of sounds put together in a way we get pleasure out of listening to. Mostly. The more interesting question is what gives it meaning — why some songs read as happy and others as sad, the way words do. You respond to music the way you respond to language.

Six elements do most of that work.

Rhythm

Rhythm is the element of time in music — a regularly repeated pattern of sound.

It’s not a musical invention. A clock ticking, water dripping from a tap, a train over rails, your own heartbeat. Life is full of rhythm if you pay attention to it.

When you listen to music you tap your foot or snap your fingers, and what you’re marking is the pulse. The rate that pulse repeats is tempo, measured in beats per minute — one beat per second is 60 BPM.

Meter is what turns an undifferentiated pulse into something recognisable. It groups the loop into repeating patterns you can count, which is why we can write music down as numbers at all. Take the ticks of a clock, spread them out in a line, group them in fours — now you have 4/4, and you can start subdividing.

You can dance to a beat. But to sing, you need melody.

Melody

Melody is a linear arrangement of notes in sequence.

There are only twelve notes in the chromatic set. Everything is built from those. It takes remarkably few to make something recognisable — pick a couple, repeat them, add a third, and a tune most people have known since childhood appears out of almost nothing. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is four notes doing very little.

That’s the point worth sitting with: recognisability is cheap. What you do afterwards isn’t.

Harmony

Harmony is notes played simultaneously to create an effect.

Take that same nursery melody on a piano, put violins underneath it, and something changes that has nothing to do with the tune. Harmony can be that simple, or as vast as Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony.

Two ideas carry most of the weight:

Consonance and dissonance. Some chords sit still; others create tension that wants to resolve. A diminished chord leaning into a major one is the whole mechanism in miniature.

Modality and tonality. Play only the white notes from C and you have the Ionian mode — one of seven (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). Tonality is broader: a home key, a hierarchy, a sense of direction created by how notes relate to that home. Atonal music refuses that hierarchy and uses all twelve notes freely — which is exactly why it can feel directionless. That’s not a flaw; it’s the intent.

Tone colour (timbre)

Play a tune on a piano, then sing it. Same notes. Completely different.

Play it on a violin and it changes again. That distinct quality separating one sound source from another is tone colour, or timbre. It’s the element that has nothing to do with which notes you chose — and composers spend their careers blending instruments to find sounds that didn’t exist before.

Form

Form is the structure — how a piece flows, and the framework musicians work inside.

Most songs are combinations of verse and chorus, some with a pre-chorus or a bridge. It’s the architecture of the thing: unglamorous, largely invisible when it works, and immediately noticeable when it doesn’t.
